چکیده

Using classical density functional theory (DFT) in a modified mean-field approximation we investigate the fluid phase behavior of quasi-two dimensional dipolar fluids confined to a plane. The particles carry three-dimensional dipole moments and interact via a combination of hard-sphere, van-der-Waals, and dipolar interactions. The DFT predicts complex phase behavior involving firstand second-order isotropic-to-ferroelectric transitions, where the ferroelectric ordering is characterized by global polarization within the plane. We compare this phase behavior, particularly the onset of ferroelectric ordering and the related tri-critical points, with corresponding three-dimensional systems, slab-like systems (with finite extension into the third direction), and true two-dimensional systems with two-dimensional dipole moments.

Density and Polarization Profiles of Dipolar Hard Ellipsoids Confined between Hard Walls: A Density Functional Theory Approach

The density and polarization profiles of the dipolar hard ellipsoids confined between hard walls are studied using the density functional theory (DFT). The Hyper-Netted Chain (HNC) approximation is used to write excess grand potential of the system with respect to the bulk value. The number density is expanded up to zero and first order in polarization to find the results. For the zero order in...

THE DENSITY PROFILES OF A LENNARD -JONES FLUID CONFINED TO A SLIT

The structure of fluids confined by planar walls is studied using density functional theory. The density functional used is a generalized form of the hypernetted chain (HNC) functional which contains a term third order in the density. This term is chosen to ensure that the modified density functional gives the correct bulk pressure. The proposed density functional applied to a Lennard-Jones...

Nucleation in molecular and dipolar fluids: Interaction site model

We consider the effect of molecular anisotropy and dipole moment on the rate of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation of molecular and dipolar fluids. Density functional theory is applied to an interaction site model of molecules composed of two tangent or fused hard spheres interacting through Lennard-Jones and coulombic potentials. Interfacial properties are conditioned by entropy vs energ...

Orientational order in dipolar fluids consisting of nonspherical hard particles

We investigate fluids of dipolar hard particles by a certain variant of density-functional theory. The proper treatment of the long range of the dipo-lar interactions yields a contribution to the free energy which favors ferromag-netic order. This corrects previous theoretical analyses. We determine phase diagrams for dipolar ellipsoids and spherocylinders as a function of the aspect ratio of t...

Effect of an electric field on the surface tension of a dipolar-quadrupolar fluid and its implication for sign preference in droplet nucleation.

The effect of a uniform electric field on interfacial properties of dipolar-quadrupolar fluids is investigated by using the density-functional theory. As in the case of purely dipolar fluids the (thermodynamic) surface tension is always altered by the external field, regardless of the direction of the field. However, unlike the purely dipolar fluids, for two given external fields with the same ...
